When I was in high school, some of my guy-friends had a punk band called Xtortion, and they used to sing a song that went
“I need you, I need you, I need you
like I need an icepick in the forehead.”
That is also how much I need to have this blog. Like I don’t have enough distractions already. But I managed to rationalize it thusly: I’m an anthropology professor at a community college, which means that I have a #!load of grading, so a blog would be very handy indeed as yet another means of procrastination. Also, a blog is a creative outlet so that means it’s a healthy thing…right?
After some ambivalence about the theme of my blog, I’ve decided to follow a pretty general route and just make this about my interests and hobbies, and whatever happens to strike my fancy at the moment. Therefore, most of it will be about film, music, and literature of Asia.
Why “new variety rice”? Well, if you’ve ever purchased sushi rice, you’ve probably seen the phrase written on the bag. I’m amused by its connotation to the state of hapa-ness, since I’m half Asian and half White.
“U.S. #1 Extra Fancy: The Unique New Variety Rice.”

VERY cool thoughts on the movies. I’ve never seen, but have heard of these movies. Now I really want to see them.
I’ve always, had an interest in Japanese pop culture in general, but more along the lines of manga and anime.
Have you had a chance to buy the dvd for “Across the Universe” yet? Turns out the special features mention that Julie Taymor spent many years in Asia. I think her Asian cultural influences were another reason we enjoyed the movie.
I didn’t get the “Across the Universe” dvd yet. It was so cool to see that movie on the big screen, I wonder if it would have the same effect on the tv screen.
I’ve seen less than ten anime, but the numbers will probably increase. I’m waiting for a book I ordered on Japanese pop culture!
Grading-schmading!
It can wait.
Don’t community college professors get to have lackeys to do that sort of thing? No, ‘lackey’ sounds bad… how about ‘administrative toady’, or ‘grading drudge’, or ‘hopeful manservant’?
Hell, you just need a side-kick, is all; and before you ask, no. I’ve moved on. My days of toiling in your shadow and scrawling smart-assed remarks on your student’s tests are gone. I gotta be me.
Love the blog by the way. Keep on shirking your tiresome duties and entertain us. You’ve got ‘a public’ to think of now.
UC Prof’s have lackey’s. CSU and CC folks don’t get lackeys ;(
